The collection of hunting weapons in the Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum contains a rifle of the turn-over construction or so called Wender. Each of its barrels has its own lock, and the barrels rotate around the horizontal axis and change places. The construction allows to quickly make two consecutive shots. Austrian firearms of the 17th–18th centuries are very similar to German firearms and sometimes it is almost impossible to distinguish them without seeing gunmakers’ marks or signatures. It is only natural considering common cultural background of the Holy Roman Empire and the similarity of natural environment and animals which the aristocracy hunted. It is believed that Austrian gunsmiths were less susceptible to the French influence and retained typical German features longer that gunsmiths working on the territory of Germany. Michael Gull as one of the leaders of Vienna gunsmiths created various types of breech-loading and repeating guns which were considered highly advanced at his time. The forged iron barrels of the rifle, octagonal in section, are placed one above the other. Their bores have seven semi-circular grooves each. The rear sights are also made of iron. They consist of one fixed and one folding low blades with round notches. The front sights are made of brass. There are engraved inscriptions on the upper planes of the barrels at the breech end. One barrel has the inscription “Michael Gvl”, which means the name of the gunmaker — Michael Gull. The other has the inscription “16 In Wienn 69”, which means “Made in Vienna in 1669”. The fore-end made of nut wood can be turned against the stock by using a lever at the junction of the two parts in front of the trigger guard. The fore-end cap and the patch box lid are made of horn. The cheek piece is inlaid with horn and ivory inserts depicting a scene of a bear fighting a leopard. There is also an ivory plate with an engraved monogram made of the letters “MH”. During the 400 years of its life the rifle has not been significantly damaged. There are some dents on the muzzle face of one of the barrels and a tiny chip on the wood to the left of the tang of the breech. The inlay on the cheek piece is partially deformed and some inserts are not flush with the wood. There are cracks on the horn butt plate and the patch box lid, a crack on the fore-end near the upper ramrod pipe as well as some other minor defects.
