Feodor Chaliapin strove to get to the essence in his interpretation of Pushkin’s characters; sometimes, however, he would add a new perspective to the characters whose rendition became somewhat stereotypical. For example, on January 29, 1902, Chaliapin performed the part of Gremin at the Bolshoi Theater for the first time. This is what Valentina Verigina — a well-known Russian actress — said in her memoirs regarding Chaliapin’s depiction of the general,

Feodor Chaliapin adored both Alexander Pushkin’s poetry and prose. Chaliapin’s performances in operas based on Alexander Pushkin’s works are considered by many critics to be the best ones in his career. Those include the parts of Farlaf in “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, Boris Godunov, Pimen and Varlaam in “Boris Godunov”, Salieri in “Mozart and Salieri”, the Miller in “Rusalka”, and Aleko.

Gremin’s portrayal turned out different, not like generally presented by other singers, not even like Pushkin envisioned it: ‘…while gravely raising. Shoulders and nose above them all, The general impressed the hall.’ Chaliapin’s Gremin did not raise his nose and shoulders. He was majestic and simple and so impressive that he resembled a great general who found himself in an ordinary situation, walking at Onegin’s arm and singing, ‘Love is for every age auspicious.’ Those words revealed a subtle irony toward himself. Gremin played by Chaliapin was an intelligent middle-aged aristocrat, who retained his gentlemanlike charm, and to whom the leading singer of the Imperial Theatre, performing the part of Onegin, clearly paled in comparison…

It is not unusual to find rather flattering remarks of Chaliapin’s contemporaries comparing him to Pushkin. For example, Maxim Gorky said,

Chaliapin represents a whole epoch in Russian art, just like Pushkin. The theater critic Alexander Valentinovich Amfiteatrov admired and praised Feodor Chaliapin’s creativity in preparation for the role, which he put on par with Pushkin’s poetic gift and the approach that Glinka and Mozart had toward music, He is an unparalleled performer, who set a new trend in art, a visionary who is forming a new school. He is a true gem and a pioneer. Will others follow him?..Yes! Our dear Feodor Ivanovich is a great man with a radiant talent, so close to that of Pushkin, Glinka and Mozart. He has a marvelous gift of not only enchanting the audience with sounds but also being able to think musically.
