The “Unexpected Joy” Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is a rare image that can be called an “icon within an icon”. This image narrates and illustrates a relatively recent event that took place. Hence, the iconography was developed rather late, not earlier than the 18th century.

This iconographic depiction was based on a miracle described by St. Demetrius of Rostov in his book “The Fleece Bedewed” of 1683. It tells the story of a man possessed by passion, who used to pray every day in front of the icon of the Virgin, but then intentionally commit an evil deed. One day, during prayer, the icon comes to life, and bleeding wounds open on the hands, feet and side of Christ. Struck by the vision, the man falls to his knees and asks the image:

O Mistress, who did this?

#4

To which he hears the answer of the Mother of God:

#5

You and other sinners have crucified My Son again with your sins just like the Jews. You call Me merciful. Why do you insult Me with your lawless deeds?

#6

In the displayed image, the penitent sinner, surrounded by wall paintings that indicate that the event takes place in his house, kneels before the image of the Mother of God with His hands raised to Her. The cartouche under the image of the icon of the Virgin features the opening lines of this story from “The Fleece Bedewed” written on a white background. Between the Virgin and the penitent sinner, the artist painted two white strips in the air and wrote down the beginning of their dialogue inside them.

The icon is dominated by red color: its shades are used to paint the walls, robes, and floor. In the architectural décor, the far wall of the room and decorative pedestals have a different color. The curtain over the head of the worshiper is green, and the curtain descending from the belt of the Virgin is purple. Like the robes, the curtains are decorated with “tin” folds characteristic of Old Russian iconography. A guardian angel is depicted on the left field, and St. Mary Magdalene is on the right. Due to the presence of the latter, it can be concluded that the icon was commissioned as a household image and the first owner’s name was Mary.
