Model of the monument to A. Pushkin in Moscow
Around a dozen albums had to be filled with images of Pushkin depicting him at various ages and in various poses. More than 30 clay and plasticine models of the monument were created. For several years, we could not sleep well. There were three feverish stages of the competition <…> As Belinsky put it, everyone wanted to be the sculptor of an ‘enduring monument’ to a man who had absorbed a vast array of colors and sounds of life.
The monument was unveiled on June 6, 1880. It was placed at the start of Tverskoy Boulevard in Strastnaya Square. It has since been relocated to the opposite side. By giving the statue a sense of movement, yet leaving some stillness to the face, Opekushin sought to elevate the monument above ordinary life’s hustle and bustle.
