The collection of Zimovniki Museum of Local History has an anniversary award, which was issued in 2005 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The medal is made out of tombaс — a special durable metal that resists corrosion. That is why, there are no signs of rust or scratches on the exhibit.
The medal “60 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” is a golden circular medal with a diameter of 3.2 centimeters. The suspender and suspension ring enable to attached the medal to a ribbon with three stripes: a wide red one in the middle and St. George ribbons on the sides. They consist of black and orange stripes, each 0.1 centimeters wide.
The medal’s obverse features a relief image of the Order of Victory and the Spasskaya Tower in the Moscow Kremlin, as well as the embossed dates of the beginning and end of the Great Patriotic War — 1941–1945. On its reverse, there is an anniversary inscription surrounded by laurel branches.
The Medal of Honor was awarded to several categories of veterans: soldiers who were directly involved in hostilities, partisans, residents of the besieged Leningrad, home front workers. Also, medals “60 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War” were awarded to veterans who had already had an award for the victory over Germany and Japan or the certificate of a war veteran. Among those awarded, there were wartime juvenile prisoners of concentration camps and ghettos.
A total of about 9 million people received the award. The veterans were given a name certificate with the medal’s number. There were special rules for wearing the medal. For example, the medal had to be attached to the left side of the chest, right after the Zhukov medal, if there was one.
The medal “60 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945” was established by Presidential Decree № 277 of February 28, 2004. Russia creates such awards in the anniversary years. The previous inferior medal in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Victory, was issued in 1995. The next one, in honor of the 65th anniversary, was issued in 2010.
