The centre of the icon shows Christ standing in the waters of the Jordan River. Above the figure of Jesus there is a depiction of a dove — the symbol of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist inclined to Christ is depicted on the left bank of the river and four angels — on the right one. In the waters of the Jordan River, one can see a figure of an elder and a young man riding on the dolphins — the allegory of two rivers, Jor and Dan.

The iconography is based on a gospel story of Jesus Christ being baptized by John the Baptist at the Jordan River. As Jesus was going out of the water, the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the shape of a dove, and a voice from heaven said: ‘This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.’ Three persons of the Holy Trinity appeared at this moment, therefore the feast of Baptism of Christ is also called Theophany.

The icon was restored by O.V. Lelekova and Y.A. Ruzavin in the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration in 1968-1969.
