The Orsk Rifle Regiment of the Red Army was formed in Orsk on 7 July 1918, just as armed confrontation between supporters of the Soviet Powers and the Orenburg Cossacks. The regiment consisted of: The Orsk Workers’ Detachment, The Kuvandyk Workers’ Detachment, The 2nd Baymak Workers’ Detachment, Kuvandyk Worker’s Detachment of Railway workers, Kuruil detachment, Dergaish detachent, Kutansin detachment and also the third battalion of the Orenburg Regiment from Aktobe.

On 15 July at the Orsk front, the regiment received its official name: ‘The Orsk Combined Infantry Regiment.’ The regiment took part in battles during the siege of Orsk by Cossack Detachments between July and September 1918. Early in the morning of 28 September, defenders of the city were forced to leave Orsk: They were transported across the bridge on the River Or along the way to Aktobe in a wagon. On 14 October the Orsk Regiment arrived in Aktobe and joined forces with the Aktobe Troops.

This is the moment at which the photograph of the Regiment’s Commanding officers was take. The subjects sitting left to right are: Second Battalion Commander Ivan M. Teplov (until 30 October 1918), Regimental Commander Anatoly Ivanovich Morozov, First Battalion Commander D.I. Rudakov. Standing left to right are: First Division Commander 1 A.D. Chebanov, Second Division Commander K. Polyakov, Third Division Commander P.S. Makeyev, and Fourth Division Commander Andrei Petrovich Markovsky.

On 30 March 1919, the regiment returned to Orsk, replacing the 24th division of the Red Army, which had taken the city on the 26 February. However, by 7 April it moved back to Orenburg. On 22 April 1919, the regiment was renamed the 277th Orsk Rifle Regiment, 93rd Brigade. Under this name, the regiment took part in the Salmysh battle, preventing the capture of Orenburg with support from the 211th Kursk regiment 24th Iron Division. Orenburg was under attack from General Bakich’s regiment.
On 5 July 1919, the 277th regiment was renamed as the 435th Orsk Rifle Regiment. Under this name, the regiment fought in the Eastern Front counteroffensive as part of the Red Army’s southern group between summer and autumn 1919. They fought within Orenburg region and the Aktobe District of Turgay oblast. Between October and November 1920, they fought in Crimea. In 1930, the regiment was called 9th Simferopol Rifle Regiment, 3rd Crimean Division.

Anatoly Ivanovich Morozov (pictured sitting in the center) took part in the Civil War as Commander of the First Orsk Rifle Regiment. He finished school and then went to the Vilnius Military School. He was a lieutenant in the Russian Army. Around the beginning of July 1918 he led a Baymak Red Guards Detachment, which became part of the combined First Orsk Rifle Regiment. Morozov was the first commander of this regiment. During the Great Patriotic war, he served in the army as Commander of the 1024th Rifle Regiment. He died in action.

Andrei Markovsky Petrovich (on the far right of the photo) is mentioned as being commander of the 4th division in August 1918. On 14 September, at the general meeting of battalion commanding officers, he was chosen as Deputy battalion commander. In 1919, he became commander of the Fourth Division by regimental order.
