Artist Igor Razdrogin created the painting The Book Bazar in 1975. In the USSR at that time, there was a cult of personal libraries. Books were collected not only by readers, but also by everyone who tried to follow this fashion. During the deficit, rare editions were obtained through acquaintances, exchanged for waste paper, received by subscription, searched for at book markets.

Spontaneous book markets appeared in all major cities of the Soviet Union. The books were greatly overvalued. A collection of poems by Osip Mandelstam in Moscow could cost 250 rubles - this amount was several times higher than the salary of a kindergarten teacher.

Igor Razdrogin depicted such a Moscow market. The artist chose for this work a complex color scheme, which combines different shades of red, blue, green, brown, gray. Color contrasts and the free manner of overlaying of colors make the crowd dynamic and expressive.

The artist smoothed dark tones with light nuances: there are few shadows in the painting, and the image seems to be filled with soft yellowish light.

The book counter - the brightest spot on the painting - is the center of the composition. It is extended in the perspective and does not end within the painting, but in a sense it goes beyond the edge of the paining as a long and endless row. Public transport - a tram or a trolley bus - can be seen in the background. This detail indicates that the book counter is deployed right on the street, near the stop, where there are always a lot of people.

Igor Razdrogin studied painting in the studio of Boris Johanson, one of the main masters of social realism. After his studies, the artist traveled a lot in the USSR.

During his travels, he painted portraits, landscapes and genre works, in which he depicted scenes from everyday life. Characters of his paintings were people of working professions, casual passers-by, representatives of small northern peoples - Chukchis and Evenks.
