In 1909, after Ertel’s death, B. Usovsky published an article about him the “Nuzhdy Derevni” (The Village Needs) magazine, where he wrote,

Dmitry Petrovich Malyutin’s book “What Needs to Be Done for Russian Agriculture” was presented to Ertel in March 1897. From 1867 to 1879, Dmitry Malyutin was the manager of the Voronezh Control Chamber. He was a member of the Council of Ministers of State Property, as well as an honorary member of the agricultural societies in Poltava, Kharkov and Lokhvytsia and the Ural Society of Devotees of Natural Science.

Dmitry Malyutin published several books, including “Our Bread Tariff” and “What Needs to Be Done for Russian Agriculture”. In the latter, he described in detail the ways of organizing the bread trade in Russia and America, presented a brief overview of the improving farming techniques in Western Europe and enumerated the measures taken to increase crop yield. A separate chapter was dedicated to the peculiarities of peasant economy and land ownership under communal tenure.
