The island of Capri in the Tyrrhenian Sea is an amazingly picturesque place, fascinating with its beauty. Its shores are rugged with coves and grottoes. People used to spend their holidays there since the days of Ancient Rome — Emperor Augustus is considered to be the first inhabitant and owner of the island, who called Capri ‘The Paradise of Idleness’.
Fedot Sychkov visited the Italian island in 1908. He was immensely impressed by the scenery and resorted to a varied color palette to capture the sea views. In the painting ‘Capri’ in 1908, the artist depicted the ruins of a building made of stones, the remnants of an arched doorway and a stone staircase.
As always, the artist paid great attention to the color scheme of the picture. The coastal waves with white foam that hit the boulders are painted in light shades of green, while in the background, the color of the water is bright blue. In the distance, the silhouettes of the lilac mountains merge with the bright sky.
The landscapes of the island of Capri were particularly beloved not only by artists but also by writers. Notably, it was here that Fedot Sychkov accidentally met Maxim Gorky. The writer lived on the island from 1906 to 1913 and wrote many literary works there, including finishing the novel ‘Mother.’ Famous guests regularly visited Maxim Gorky, Chaliapin, Bunin, Lunacharsky, and even Lenin being among them.
One evening, after finishing some sketches, Fedot Sychkov walked along the beach and saw a group of people. In the center of the group stood a tall man, who was saying something fervently, addressing the gathering. It was Maxim Gorky. The artist did not want to intrude and did not dare to introduce himself to the writer. However, unable to overcome his curiosity, he watched him while standing nearby: Sychkov studied Gorky’s appearance like a professional artist. The writer immediately felt this peculiar look. He quickly turned to the artist and looked at him directly. As it seemed to Fedot Sychkov, Gorky even became embarrassed. They looked at each other just for a moment, but some noise distracted the whole group, and the writer, along with his companions, hurried to the source of the sound.
This fleeting encounter led to several drawings that are now stored in the museum archives and a sketch for the painting “Gorky on Capri in 1908”. The artist planned to depict the writer surrounded by listeners exactly as he saw him, but, unfortunately, he did not complete the work.
