Significant steps have been taken in the town of childhood to preserve the memory of the celestial music composer. A memorial plaque with a bas-relief (the work of sculptor Valentin Prasolov) was installed on the building of the former railway school No. 25, where Alfred and his brother Victor Schnittke studied. On August 22, 2018, a monument to Alfred Schnittke was unveiled in the park at the square. Its author is a famous Saratov sculptor A. A. Shcherbakov, the Honored Artist of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. The monument to Alfred Schnittke, the great composer and musician of the 21st century, was a historical and long-awaited event for the citizens and the general public of his hometown. There was uniqueness and probably some kind of sacredness in the fact that his first monument appeared exactly in the composer’s homeland! Despite the rain, a lot of people came. There were guests of honor: the Minister of Culture of the Saratov region, musicians, artists, writers as well as the general public and admirers of the composer’s talent and works. The music of the great maestro was played by students of the Schnittke Music and Aesthetic Lyceum.

The Engels Music and Aesthetic Lyceum was named after Alfred Schnittke.

There was also some remarkable research work done by archivists of the State Historical Archive of the Volga Germans. They presented original documents and creative works of Alfred and Victor’s father — Harry Schnittke, their mother — Maria Vogel, and their maternal uncle — Joseph and aunt — Pauline.

On November 12, 2001, the Saratov Regional Philharmonic was named after Alfred Harrievich Schnittke. On that day, in the festive atmosphere, Lotarev V. V., the Minister of Culture of the Saratov region, announced the order to give the Philharmonic the name of Alfred Schnittke.

Engels honors his memory. In 1997, a year before his death, Schnittke was awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen of the town”.
