The first attempts to record sound using mechanical musical instruments were made in the 16th–18th centuries. There was a wide variety of shapes and designs, ranging from music snuff boxes to large striking clocks.

In 1877, the American inventor Thomas Edison invented the phonograph — a device that could record and reproduce sound. There were numerous versions of phonographs, but they all had a cylindrical roller, which was used to record the sound.

In 1887, the German immigrant Emil Berliner received a patent in America for designing a new sound recording apparatus — the gramophone. Berliner managed to overcome the shortcomings of the phonograph. The gramophone reproduced sounds loudly and clearly, and the level of distortion was minimal. Sound carriers — gramophone records — came into production.

A gramophone is a device for recording and playing sound from a gramophone record, in fact, it is a modified phonograph invented by Thomas Edison. The “Diary” of Anna Allendorf included the following lines: “Lyolya started the gramophone, I liked it more than the phonograph, the sound was much clearer and without hissing.”

In the Russian Empire, the gramophone cost as much as three cows. Few people in the province could afford such a luxury. Usually there were one or two gramophones per village. People danced to the music played by the gramophone and listened to their favorite songs. In 1910, The Moskovskie Vedomosti published the following news: “A local peasant bought an inexpensive gramophone with records for the wedding season and gets invitations to parties, where for a very decent fee (from 1 to 3 rubles) he plays various dance pieces all evening.”

At first, gramophones were brought to Russia from abroad: from Germany, Switzerland, and America. The devices themselves were created abroad, but bringing large horns was inconvenient. Therefore, horns were made in Russia, and sometimes in a handicraft way. They were different: sometimes they were decorated with magnificent painting or covered with enamel.

In 1902, the first Russian factory that produced gramophones opened in Riga. The demand was high. The nobility considered the gramophone to be an indispensable attribute of everyday life. The gramophone was perceived not only as a device for listening to music, but also as a decorative interior item.
