Modern electronic flash lasts for a very long time and, what is more, it gives a very short — ‘freezing’ light impulse. The only problem is that it requires a voltage of at least 200 units! Modern photographers cannot imagine how exotic in the sixties and even in the eighties a photographer looked without a long cord of a flash that could only be powered when plugged in.

Luch-61 is just one of those few devices capable of autonomous operation from a battery. However, this battery was not easy: ‘Lightning’ gave 300 volts, and it was almost impossible to buy it. Such batteries were distributed mainly to photo studios and organizations that had their own photo laboratories.

Transistor high-frequency converter invented in 1958 by Paul Metz and now built into any flash, reached Soviet photographers only in the mid-eighties, and since then freedom from the socket was given by the dangerous and naughty ‘Molniya’ battery, which occupied almost the entire suitcase of the ‘Luch’ flash.
