The photo shows Robert Rozhdestvensky with his wife Alla Kireeva and composer Oscar Feltsman, author of the songs “Landyshy” (“Lilies of the Valley”), “Good Morning”, “I Believe, Friends”. He also composed film scores and theatre music. Feltsman and Rozhdestvensky were friends for many years and collaborated on songwriting. Edita Piekha performed their most famous shared composition “Big Sky”.

Their cooperation started with musical dramaturgy — the musical “My Brother Plays the Clarinet”, which included many sung monologues, dialogues, and songs, which reflected the sentiments of young people who had just entered adult life. The compositions were about love and life choices.

I admit that I wanted to work with him, but my inner shyness prevented me from making a phone call to Robert, “We met through a Soviet writer Anatoly Aleksin. Tolya wrote a play called “My Brother Plays the Clarinet” and suggested that Robert and I work on it together. I wrote the music, Rozhdestvensky wrote the lyrics. It was our first time working together, but we immediately felt that we were comfortable together”. From that time until almost the last days of Robert’s life, they often created together. Rozhdestvensky liked to say: “You know, Oscar, you and I are like-minded. We even think alike…” “After working on the play, we have practically never parted and composed together.

After this theatrical piece, the cooperation between Rozhdestvensky and Feltsman continued: together they created the musicals “The Old Houses”, “Charley”s Aunt”, wrote a number of lyrical songs (“Old Words”) and a series of ballad songs (“Big Sky”, “The Ballad of Immortality”, “The Ballad of the Banner”, “The Ballad of Colors”). “The Ballad of the Banner” won first prize at the International Political Song Contest in 1969.

Robert is an amazing name, he doesn”t need the patronymic. In the Far East they say — when you are in Moscow, contact Robert, he will help. And it was clear whom they meant.
Remembering Rozhdestvensky, Feltsman said

As a composer, he collaborated with various poets, including Andrey Voznesensky, Rasul Gamzatov, Yevgeny Dolmatovsky, and many other popular authors. But it was with Rozhdestvensky that Feltsman wrote his most famous compositions.
