The photo shows Robert Rozhdestvensky and composer Dmitry Kabalevsky together with the performers of the “Requiem” oratorio. This composition is considered to be the most important early work of the poet. Initially, “Requiem” was a choral symphony. Rozhdestvensky wrote the poetic text for it at Kabalevsky’s request.

The composer shared the story behind “Requiem” with the “Yunost” (“Youth”) magazine readers:

For many years I have been nagged by a dream of composing a large choral symphony in honor of those who lost their lives during the Great Patriotic War. Some faint outlines and musical images of the new modern Requiem were already simmering in the back of my mind… One day I shared my dream with Robert Rozhdestvensky, whose poetry has fascinated me for so long with its many wonderful qualities. ‘It is he, who could write the lyrics’ — I thought to myself. And it seems to me that I was right. Anyhow, a very short time after our first meeting, Rozhdestvensky has read out to me the first parts of his ‘Requiem’, and shortly thereafter it was finished.

The “Requiem” oratorio with lyrics by Robert Rozhdestvensky premiered in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in February 1963. It was performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Moscow Conservatory, the Moscow State and Regional Choirs, the Children Choir of the Institute of Artistic Education, and the Bolshoi Theater soloists — Valentina Levko and Vladimir Valaitis, conducted by Boris Khaykin.

Later, Rozhdestvensky published “Requiem” separately as a poem, which brought him fame at home and abroad:

Remember!
Swift though the stream
of days and years
may flow —
remember!
To those who fell
a debt of love
we owe —
remember!
This debt lives on:
no tears
can e’er repay,
nor sorrow;
We must
keep faith with them
today,
tomorrow.

The poet always emphasized “Requiem”, considered it to be his masterpiece. Various voices can be heard in the poem: the last testament of the fallen for the Motherland during the war, the appeal to a black memorial stone, and the oath of the living. All of those voices blend into one voice of the people, who lived through so much sorrow during the war.
