Alexandra Yemelyanova, a participant in combat operations to liberate Oryol, Minsk and Kaunas, is pictured. She was born in 1920, in Sovetsk, Kirov region, in the family of a serviceman. When the girl was nine years old, her parents moved to Anzhero-Sudzhensk, where she graduated from school No. 11.
In 1938, Alexandra Yemelyanova entered Tomsk Medical Institute, but did not manage to finish it: the war had begun, and soon, the whole course was sent to the battlefront. Yemelyanova served at the 1st Belorussian Front as a junior military doctor of the medical unit of the 3262nd Rifle Siberian Division. She was then promoted to the rank of medical captain and transferred to the hospital platoon of the Medical Sanitary Battalion.
Captain Yemelyanova received two state awards for her service at the front. One of them is the medal ‘For Battle Merit’, and the second — the Order of the Red Star ‘for reduction of mortality of the wounded fighters to a minimum, high qualified help on the spot, for the excellent service on the firing front line and for saving lives of defenders of the Fatherland.’
The Order of the Red Star was one of the first Soviet awards. It was established on April 6, 1930 ‘for great contribution to the defense of the USSR in war and in peacetime and for ensuring public safety’.
Medal ‘For Battle Merit’ was established in 1938. This award was given for initiative and courageous actions in battle by soldiers of the Red Army, the Navy, the border and internal troops. During the Great Patriotic War, more than 3,000,000 men received this mark of distinction.
After the war, Alexandra Yemelyanova returned to Anzhero-Sudzhensk. Since 1950, she headed the neurological department of City Hospital No. 1. Her services at work were recognized with the medal for ‘Labor Valor’ and the badge for ‘Excellence in Health Care’.
When Yemelyanova retired, she continued to work in her specialty. The townspeople knew and respected her, the doctor was a well-known neurologist in Anzhero-Sudzhensk. She said about herself, ‘even in peacetime, I performed my duties as a doctor perfectly, fighting for human life in a warlike manner’.
