The photograph depicts Vasily Mikhailovich Kolontsov with his family. He was a Russian revolutionary, a Bolshevik, and a participant of the Russian Civil War.
Vasily Kolontsov was born in 1888 in Rudnevo, Moscow Governorate. As a teenager, he moved to Bolshie Mytishchi where he started working at the railcar-building plant. He took part in strikes and during the Moscow Uprising of 1905, he fought on the barricades of Krasnaya Presnya.
In 1911, a party cell started up at the Mytisichi railcar-building plant. In 1912, the cell had about 20 people, according to the intel obtained by the Secret Police Department that was in charge of domestic intelligence. In the early September 1917, Izvestiya Moskovskogo Soveta Rabochih Deputatov (News of the Moscow Soviet of Workers' Deputies) informed that reports from the meetings of the representatives of regional Soviet of Workers' Deputies ‘…noted leftward movements among working masses in all regions, systemic creation of resistance bodies against counterrevolutionary attacks, reported the organization of a workers' Red Guard.’
In Mytishchi, the Red Guard started forming as early as May 1917. By October 1917, the Mytishchi headquarters of the Red Guard created three squadrons. On October 25, 1917 at 4:00 PM, the Mytishchi Soviet received a telephoned message from the Moscow Governorate Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies:
