Anna Fyodorovna Goryacheva was a neighbor of Mikhail Bulgakov and his first wife Tatiana Lappa in communal apartment No. 50 at 10 Bolshaya Sadovaya. It was she who later became the prototype of the famous Anna the Plague in the novel “The Master and Margarita”.

Not much is known about Anna Goryacheva: in 1924, when Bulgakov lived in Bolshaya Sadovaya, she was 53 years old. She was dependent on her husband and was registered in her apartment with her 20-year-old son Mikhail. Anna was known for her noisiness and often annoyed the writer.

Because of his neighbors, including Anna Goryacheva, Bulgakov called his living space “the vile room in a vile house” and in his diary shared his dreams of a quiet, peaceful apartment,

If I don’t have an apartment, I’m not a person, but only half a person.

Later, he added,

If we put aside my imaginary and real fears of life, we can admit that there is only one major defect in my life now — the lack of an apartment.

Tatiana Lappa recalled in an interview,

…on the other side of the corridor, opposite us, lived Goryacheva Annushka. She had a son, and she beat him all the time, and he always screamed. And anyway, who knows what was going on there. They would buy homemade vodka, get drunk, definitely start fighting, and the women yell: ‘Save me! Help! ’ Bulgakov, of course, would jump out, run to call the police. And the police would come — but they would close the door and sit quietly inside. Once, the police even wanted to fine him.

In Bulgakov’s feuilletons of the first half of the 1920s, Annushka had a special place. For example, in the story “No. 13. — The Elpit Workers’ Commune Building” heroine Annushka Pylyaeva, the “scourge of the house”, as the author calls her, causes a devastating fire, and the building burns down.

In the story “Moonshine Lake”, Annushka’s dancing put a limit to the patience of the narrator’s wife,

At 8 o’clock in the evening, when Matlot burst out dashing and Annushka began to dance, my wife got up from the couch and said: I can’t do it anymore. Do what you want, but we have to get out of here. — Baby, I replied in desperation, — what can I do? I can’t get a room. It’s worth 20 billion, I make four. Until I finish the novel, we can’t hope for anything else. Be patient.

Mikhail Bulgakov left apartment No. 50 in November 1924. Anna stayed in the famous communal building a little longer — the following year, together with her son, she moved to apartment No. 33 of the same building at 10 Bolshaya Sadovaya.
