Varvara Nikolaevna Verbitskaya (1860–1933) was the maternal aunt of the poet Velimir Khlebnikov.
She was the middle daughter of the actual state councilor Nikolay Osipovich and Maria Petrovna. Unlike Velimir’s mother Ekaterina Nikolaevna, who did not complete her studies, Varvara graduated from the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg with a gold medal. Varvara Nikolaevna taught geography, Russian language, Russian history and needlework at St. Petersburg schools.
After the birth of their youngest daughter Vera, the Khlebnikovs left Kalmykia and Vladimir Alexeyevich started looking for a new home. Due to poor health, Ekaterina Nikolaevna found it difficult to cope with five children, and she temporarily moved to St. Petersburg, to her parents and sister. During that period (1891 — early 1892) Varvara Nikolaevna spent a lot of time with her nephews and became very close to them. They affectionately called her Varya. The middle boy, Viktor, was especially close to Varvara.
Visiting the Hermitage and going to Murino with Varya, looking at paintings and watching artists at work made a lasting impression on little Vitya, and he became interested in “whether… he will be able to draw when he grows up.”
