Sergey VikUlov was a Soviet poet, participant of the Great Patriotic War. Sergey VikUlov was born on September 13, 1922 in the village of YemelYAnovskaya BelozErsky District of the VOlogda Oblast. His father worked as a paramedic. Vikulov’s childhood and youth took place in the northern village among peasants, carpenters and hunters.
In 1940, VikUlov was drafted into the army and sent to the Sevastopol School of Anti-aircraft Artillery. In August 1941, he was released early from the school with the rank of “lieutenant” and was placed at the disposal of the Volga Military District. He participated in the defense of Moscow, commanding an anti-aircraft artillery battery on the Kalinin and Stalingrad fronts. He was then assistant chief of staff of the 247th Army Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. He rose to the rank of captain. He participated in the liberation of Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Austria.
Before the war Sergei VikUlov’s poetry was published in the district newspaper ‘BelozErsky kolkhOznik’. During the war, several poems under the pseudonym Ya.Servik (I - Sergey Vikulov) were published in the newspaper of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. The first collection of poems ‘Conquered Happiness’ was published in 1949.
Sergey VikUlov was enrolled as a literature major to the Vologda State Pedagogical Institute and graduated in 1951. In 1961, VikUlov became the first secretary of the Vologda Writers' Organization. Soon he soon activates literary life in Vologda, writes articles about poems of Nikolai Rubtsov and other poets. In 1967 VikUlov became the deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine ‘Young Guard’ (‘Molodaya Gvardiya’), in 1968 - the editor-in-chief of the magazine ‘Our Contemporary’ (‘Nash Sovermennik’), where he published the works of Valentin Rasputin, YUri BondarEv, Vasily ShukshIn, Vladimir SoloUkhin and other writers.
Sergei Vikulov’s body of work includes 20 books of poetry and poems, 6 books of essays.
Sergey VikUlov was awarded two orders of the Red Star, the order “Badge of Honor”, two orders of the Red Banner of Labour’, the order of friendship of peoples and the order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree. He held the title of Honored Cultural Worker of the USSR, was a laureate of the M.Gorky State Prize and the International M.A. Sholokhov Prize in the field of literature and art.
