Majit Gafuri and his family

This photo was taken in 1928. It depicts the first national poet of Bashkortostan Majit Gafuri, his wife Zukhra Gafuri, sons Anvar and Khalit and nephew Gabbas.

The family always meant a lot to Majit Gafuri. His wife Zukhra obliged to provide a reliable support, did not distract the poet from his creative work with everyday problems. She was also the first listener of his works and counselor. Gafuri had two sons. The elder son — Anvar, a member of the Great Patriotic War, had military awards. Afterwards, he became a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR and worked actively in Bashkir radio and television stations. The younger son — Khalit was also talented, but, unfortunately, died early.

In one of Gafuri’s letters addressed to Zukhra, the following lines are written:

Here I am for the first time calling you my dear khanum. For the first time I am letting you know about my love… I am in love with you for a long time; I observe your gait, your character. The more I observe you, the stronger my love grows… If you agree to accept me as a constant companion of your life, I will consider it the greatest happiness to be by your side, to share my joyful experiences with you. You know it: I am not a handsome nor a rich man. The love of knowledge is my best trait; I am a writer who lives on the means derived from my writing.

Zukhra gave her consent to the poet’s letter.

During the life of the poet, his wife systematized and kept in order the archive, and after his death began to write memoirs. The pages of memoirs she managed to compile show that Zukhra had a literary gift as well. She outlived her husband by three years and was buried in Ufa in the Muslim cemetery.

Anvar Gafuri also devoted his life to popularizing his father’s work: he gave lectures, published memoirs, appeared on radio and television. He wrote,

I go to Matrosov Park, where my father”s grave is located, and then I go to the Majit Gafuri House-Museum. I often visit it, share my memories with visitors. I like to read the entries in the guest book: Our National Pride! — Tukhvatullina from Tashkent wrote. — The museum created in honor of this genius helped us understand this.

A student of Bashkir State University, Akhmetova left the following note: “I visit the Majit Gafuri House-Museum every year and I always leave with new, bright thoughts about the great poet. I have such an impression as if I was meeting Gafuri himself.” Many kind words are written in the guest book. But the words of Yakov Ukhsai, the Chuvash people’s poet, are especially memorable:

Dear Majit! I was in your home. You are alive both here and in the people”s hearts!
