The 181st Motor Rifle Regiment is a military unit of the Ground Forces of the USSR Armed Forces. On December 26, 1979, the 181st motorized rifle regiment, as part of the main forces of the 108th motorized rifle division, crossed the state border of the USSR with Afghanistan near the city of Termes to provide military assistance to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Through all the years spent on the territory of Afghanistan the regiment actively participated in almost all military operations conducted by the command of the 40th combined arms army in the space from Hairatan to Kandahar.
On February 8, 1989, during the withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan, the regiment completed the march, crossed the USSR border and entered the Termes testing ground. On March 15, 1989, the regiment was disbanded. The Battle Flag, the Diploma and historical information were turned over to the Central Museum of the USSR Armed Forces.
The regiment personnel include 4 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 59 people were awarded the Order of the Red Banner, 978 people were awarded the Order of the Red Star.
