The bookcase presented in the museum’s collection is made of mahogany wood using metal and fabric. The upper shelf is connected to the lower part by means of 16 vertical racks, with four of them shaped. The lower part of the bookcase is a closed cabinet with a door. The upper shelf is decorated with fabric, which is quite rare.
The first bookcases appeared in the Renaissance. This special type of furniture in the form of shelves connected by racks was intended for storing documents, papers, and interior items. Mostly bookcases were found among wealthy Europeans who needed furniture to store various interior items. For this purpose, the bookcase is irreplaceable. It is convenient to place all the necessary things on several levels.
Since the 18th century in France, mass production of bookcases has developed. Most often, cabinetmakers made custom models that were small in height to accommodate flowers, books, and luxury attributes. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the second wave of popularity of this furniture began. Bookcases were used in the most unexpected industries, for example, in navigation. Metal structures appeared, as well as design products made of combined materials.
At the beginning of the 20th century, with the birth of modernism in furniture, the search for concise forms increased based on the use of new materials, such as steel pipes and strips, as well as laminated wood. Special importance was given to the constructive basis of the subject and its functional organization. There was built-in, sectional collapsible and transformable furniture. Special furniture was developed for offices, banks, and schools.
The presented bookcase was made in the mid-20th century. During this period, new trends appeared in the production of furniture. In the United States, the so-called organic design became widespread. The use of plastic, rubber and bent plywood, along with wood and metal, made it possible to create complex curved shapes that resembled natural ones. At the same time, there was an interest in ergonomics, i.e. primarily, in the design of office furniture.
