Elena Pavlovna, née Princess Frederica Charlotte Maria of Württemberg, married the youngest son of Paul I, Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich in 1823, and converted to Orthodox Christianity, taking the name Elena Pavlovna. She was a prominent philanthropist and public figure who supported the abolition of serfdom and other liberal reforms. Elena Pavlovna received Russian lessons from Vasily Andreyevich Zhukovsky and Pyotr Alexandrovich Pletnyov.
Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna
Last Sunday, I introduced myself to the grand duchess. I visited Her Highness at the Kamenny Island, in the pleasant frame of mind you are accustomed to seeing me when I wear my splendid uniform. However, she was so gracious that I forgot both my unfortunate role and my irritation…
After learning about Pushkin’s deadly injury in his last duel, Elena Pavlovna sent several letters to Vasily Zhukovsky, who was staying at that time at Pushkin’s residence on the Moika Street,
Dearest Zhukovsky! I have just learned about the unfortunate incident that befell Pushkin. Please keep me informed about his condition and let me know if there is any chance of his recovery. This tragic event has devastated me, and it is very sad that such a wonderful talent can be taken from Russia and such an outstanding person — from his friends. Please let me know the latest developments and if there is any hope, and if it is possible, please convey my deepest sympathies to him. Elena.
Later on, Vasily Zhukovsky recalled the following,
The grand duchess, who greatly admired Pushkin, sent several messages to me, and I provided Her Highness with detailed updates on his condition.
Despite the lack of extensive documentary evidence available to fully reconstruct the history of the relationship between Alexander Pushkin and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlova, one thing is clear: Pushkin’s diaries, his letters, the letters from Elena Pavlova to her husband, and memoirs, as well as the text of “Commander” handwritten by the author in her album, — all that irrefutably attests to the spiritual affinity between these two remarkable individuals and their frequent meetings and conversations.
