Jules Dupre, like Rousseau, did a lot of work in the area of Barbizon and in the forest of Fontainebleau. He renders nature in an epic manner, giving it a dramatic character. The artist presents painstaking detail of his selected motif in his landscapes. His painting has a very rich tone and a weightiness to it. In the painting Oaks by the Road, Dupre incorporates the strength and power of nature in the motif of the sprawling trees. Meanwhile, the clouds drifting low above the horizon and the winding country road give rise to the sensation of unhurried movement, a measured rhythm to the flow of life. The relief texture of the painting and the separated brush strokes characterize the style of Dupre’s later works.
