In 1927, Fyodor Shalyapin visited Georgy Chicherin, who was undergoing treatment in Frankfurt am Main. They talked about music and Wolfgang Mozart. Later, the People’s Commissar mentioned those friendly conversations in his letters.

Fyodor Shalyapin was a Russian opera and chamber singer. He had a reputation of an artist who combined in his work “innate musicality, bright vocal skills, extraordinary acting skills.” In addition to music, he was engaged in painting, graphics and sculpture, acted in films.

Shalyapin himself thought that his artistic career bean in 1889, when he entered the drama troupe of Vasily Serebryakov as an extra. On March 29, 1890, the first performance took place - Shalyapin performed the part of Zaretsky in Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera ‘Eugene Onegin’ staged by the Kazan society of stage art lovers.

Throughout May and early June 1890, Fyodor Shalyapin was a chorus player of Serebryakov’s operetta enterprise. In 1893 he moved to Moscow, and in 1894 - to St. Petersburg, where he sang in “Arcadia” in the opera company of Mikhail Lentovsky. The beautiful voice of the aspiring artist, and especially the expressive musical recitation along with the truthful playing, drew the attention of critics and the public to him.

In 1895, the Directorate of the Imperial Theaters accepted Shalyapin into the St. Petersburg Opera Company. Philanthropist Savva Mamontov, who at that time ran an opera house in Moscow, noticed an outstanding talent in the musician and persuaded him to join his troupe. In 1896-1899, Shalyapin sang at Mamontov’s ‘Private Russian Opera’ and during those four seasons he gained great fame.

In 1899, Fyodor Shalyapin again entered the service at the Imperial Theaters - that time he sang in Moscow, at the Bolshoi Theater, where he enjoyed great success.

In 1915, Shalyapin made his debut in cinema, he played the role of Ivan the Terrible in the historical film drama Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible.

Starting from 1918, Shalyapin was the artistic director of the former Mariinsky Theater. In the same year, he was the first to receive the title of People’s Artist of the Republic.

Since July 1922, the artist moved abroad and toured extensively. On April 12, 1938, at the age of 66, Fyodor Shalyapin died in Paris in the arms of his wife.
