St. Nicholas of Myra is one of the most revered saints in the Christian world. In the recent past in Russia, his icon could be found in almost every house. He is revered by believers as a speedy helper in troubles and a defender of travelers and sailors, who also aids those that are wrongfully convicted or slandered.
He lived in the last third of the 3rd — first half of the 4th century. He was archbishop of the city of Myra in Lycia in Asia Minor. Nicholas became known for many miracles and appearances to people both during his earthly life and after.
The half-length image of St. Nicholas, although
quite large in size, was intended to be kept at one’s house, as evidenced by
the mixed naïve Old Russian manner of painting. The depictions of saints in the
fields with the names of the customer’s family (inscriptions with names are
illegible) also indicates its intended purpose. The hands of the saint indicate
his holiness: his right hand is raised in a blessing and in his left hand he
holds the Gospel, with the words of the apostle Luke (6:17):
