In his painting Reading, Léger depicted his wife and student Nadia Khodasevich. Here, he combines large local blue, red, yellow, and white planes so that they seem to be shifted in relation to the black contour of the model’s figure. These colored planes are independent geometric figures. Léger often used this technique in the 1940-1950s.
