With the participation of Tikhon Khrennikov, an art college was opened in Yelets, where musicians and artists are trained. ‘Musical art in Russia is a great art that gave the world the greatest artists, the greatest performers and composers. I am glad that the connection between generations is not interrupted and continues in new talents’, the composer said. Pavel Burdukov is one of the graduates of the college, a student of the famous Yelets landscape painter Nikolay Klimov.
‘Church of the Intercession’ is an early professional work of Burdukov, in which the original and unique style of the master was manifested. The artist depicted one of the largest and most beautiful temples in Yelets — the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. It was built in the 60s of the XIX century with the money of local merchants. The author of the project was a famous architect, a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts Andrey Ton.
Streets, squares and public gardens of Yelets often attracted the attention of painters with their lovely provincial charm. Burdukov chose a view of the temple from the side of Profsoyuznaya Street, an old petty bourgeois street, where small one-story houses and large green front gardens are located. Against the background of the blue sky and clouds, the church building looked more monumental. With the help of rich red, green and yellow spots, the artist conveyed the impression of a hot summer day.
Among the parishioners of the Church of the Intercession were students of the local male gymnasium — writers Ivan Bunin, Mikhail Prishvin, artist Nikolay Zhukov and philosopher Sergey Bulgakov, as well as the Khrennikov family. The future composer sang in the church choir and served as a bishop’s “crutch” — his duty was to hold the bishop’s staff at the moment when he was blessing someone. The composer said that he remembered all the acts of worship for the rest of his life, and the ringing of church bells was always the best music for him.
In the 30s of the twentieth century, the temple was closed and was in desolation for a long time, and then it was used as a warehouse. In the 50s the bell tower collapsed while laying the water supply. In 1997 the church was returned to the worshippers, and now the building is being restored.
