Buddha Bhaisajyaguru (Sanskrit), Mala (Tibetan), Otosho (Buryat) is a leader of eight Buddhas of medicine, when literally translated, his name means ‘healer guru’, ‘healer patron’. He is also called the ‘Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light’. Lapis-lazuli is believed to be a curing stone. Symbolically it is the very pureness, which means it cleanses from the symptoms of illness at both physical and spiritual levels. Buddhist believe that touching Bhaisajyaguru’s image may cure from any disease.

A gilded sculpture represents Bhaisajyaguru in the monk’s clothing. He sits in the lotus position at the lion throne. In his left hand, resting on his thigh, he holds a cup for gifts (‘patra’) with a curing herb, symbol of panacea from all illnesses and mental defilements. The herb is called myrobalan. Furthermore, there is a medicine made of herbs that suppress the illnesses of mucus, wind, yellow bile and three root poisons of consciousness, namely anger, affection and ignorance in the patra. The Buddha’s right hand shown in “varada” mudra (gesture of protection) is supposed to hold myrobalan’s caulis. It is missing at the featured work. The Buddha has a small round bulb called ‘urna’, or the third eye, situated above his nasal septum. At the top of the skull there is a bigger bulb called ‘ushnisha’. His short hair is wavy, the long earlobes are pierced.

The Buddha of medicine passed the people the Four Medical Tantras where the methods of curing over 400 physical deceases are represented, their sources are pointed and the symptoms are described. This is why the Bhaisajyaguru’s meditational practices wield incredible power. It is assumed that even repeating this Buddha’s name can protect from many deceases and unfavorable future reincarnations. Furthermore, reading Bhaisajyaguru’s mantra every day may protect from many various diseases, purify negative karma and tame the maleficent spirits that bring suffer.
