Giorgio de Chirico
The Big Tower

The philosophical component was an integral part of Giorgio de Chirico’s works. He was the founder of “metaphysical painting” in Italy, a poet and an intellectual who was raised in Greece and later studied in Munich, an important center of symbolism and Art Nouveau. Artworks by Böcklin and Klinger, as well as German philosophers, influenced his personality as an artist. De Chirico found his own style very early. For him, addressing the issues of the world of mystical ideas, dreams, and visions became a sign system.

“Only what I see with open eyes exists, but seeing with my eyes closed is even better”,
wrote the artist.

His subconscious visions and dreams always found an objective form. At the same time, reality in his works turned into a monument in itself.

“The Big Tower”
#3
In his painting “The Big Tower”, De Chirico invites us to a metaphysical, frozen world of images that remain out of time. It looks like there is no air in the depicted space. A high tower is one of De Chirico’s favorite motifs. Figures of people next to it look disproportionately small, and it seems that they feel uncomfortable in this visionary world. The feeling of unreality is created by the reduced perspective giving the effect of remoteness and approximation of objects, the daunting light of the dawning sky covering the square and hills in the background, flashes of red color on the tower growing in front of the oppressive space, and long shadows from objects.
