The fresco presents the composition of the Protoevangelium cycle (XII). The left side of the scene depicts the Virgin Mary in the house of Joseph behind the yarn of purple and purple for the veil of the temple of the Lord. On the right is the traditional plot of the Annunciation of Mary at the Well, one of the oldest versions of the iconography of the feast of the Annunciation, formed in the era of early Christian art. The Virgin Mary with a golden jug in her hand is depicted at the well, the Archangel above her proclaims: ‘Rejoice, Gracious! The Lord is with you; blessed are you among wives. ’

Protoevangelium of James is early Christian apocrypha about the life of the Virgin Mary and the Nativity of Jesus Christ. Apocrypha became the basis for a comprehensive narrative cycle, traditionally included in the decoration system of the Virgin’s temples. In ancient Russian monumental painting of the 16th-17th centuries the Protoevangelium cycle is often adjacent to the cycle of the Akathist to the Virgin Mary.
