During the reign of the last Russian emperor, the Alexander Palace had a substantial collection of plates, commemorating the coronation of Nicholas II and the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov. The plates were presented to the Emperor on the occasion of his coronation celebrations and during his travels around Russia.
In 1915, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna ordered 175 presentation plates to be placed in the hallway of the imperial family’s living quarters and in the entrance hall of the imperial palace.
The plate on display was presented to the Emperor by the Tambov Merchant Society. There is an entry about this trip in the diary of Emperor Nicholas II dated 7 December 1914:
