Ignatiy Vladislavovich Gulbinsky, better known under the pseudonym Vladislavlev, was born in the town of Valuyki, Belgorod region. On his mother’s side, he came from a family of rebellious Polish-Lithuanian nobility, while the relatives from his father’s side were Russian serfs and the impoverished szlachta (Polish gentry). He studied at a realschule in Voronezh.

After graduating from the school, Gulbinsky entered the Polytechnic Institute in Kyiv and was interested in philology, law, and political science.

In 1903, after graduating from the institute, he was sentenced to exile in the Olonets governorate. The reason for that was his participation in student and workers’ upheavals, as well as distribution of the “Iskra” newspaper and the works of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Georgi Plekhanov, and others.

In exile, Ignatiy Gulbinsky remained true to his beliefs: he secretly received revolutionary literature, leaflets, and brochures from like-minded people and conducted propaganda among the local population. Moreover, it was there in Karelia that he engaged in bibliography: he collected materials for a subject index on the relationship between Russian writers and the autocratic system.

Under Soviet rule, Ignatiy Gulbinsky became a permanent employee of many publishing houses and magazines, including the “Vestnik narodnykh fakultetov” (The People’s Faculties Herald), “Znamya rabfakovtsa” (Banner of the Worker’s Faculty), “Knizhnik” (Bibliognost), and “Narodnoye prosveshcheniye” (The People’s Education). Using the pseudonym Vladislavlev, he gave speeches about bibliographic evaluations, reviews, recommendations, and selections of books. As he was truly interested in the development of the book industry, he participated in congresses and meetings devoted to this issue.

At the Second All-Russian Congress of Bibliographers (1926), Vladislavlev made a report on the methodology of bibliography in the context of the theory of dialectical materialism. The speaker revealed to the audience the importance of this humanitarian branch in the social process, talked about the differences between socialist and “deeply utilitarian” capitalist bibliography and ways to increase the former’s effectiveness.

In 1928, this report was seen by the public under the title “Bibliography and Socialism. On Developing the Marxist Bibliography”.
