The exhibition of the Victory Museum includes items of military uniforms. This cap was worn by sailors of the Baltic Fleet, a formation within the Soviet Armed Forces. The Fleet’s main objectives were to destroy the enemy’s naval facilities and forces, participate in special operations, and play a vital role in securing naval dominance.

During the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet Navy became a powerful force that had a significant impact not only at sea but also in the coastal areas. The Navy managed to hold off the enemy’s attacks and take decisive action from the first days of the war. The ships evacuated civilians, accompanied convoys with necessary goods, attacked the enemy’s communication lines and conveyed landing forces.

The Fleet suffered heavy losses: according to official data, over fifty thousand sailors were killed in action. Forty-six submarines were sunk. Despite the losses in manpower and equipment, the Baltic Fleet continued to hold the line and defend the country.

The Baltic Fleet helped the ground forces in coastal areas. During the early periods of war, it provided cover to the land forces, carried out tactical assault landings, and ensured the continuity of supplies to the Soviet fortresses in Tallinn, the Hanko Peninsula, and the Moonzund Islands. Soviet submarines were also very active: they achieved their objectives and managed to disrupt the supply of iron ore from Norway to Nazi Germany.

The situation changed when Finland left the war in 1944. Soviet submarines continued their operations in the Baltic Sea after clearing the mines. The most significant achievements were associated with destroying the enemy’s liners “Wilhelm Gustloff”, “Goya”, and “General von Steuben”. The sinking of these liners resulted in heavy losses for the enemy, with around twenty thousand people killed.

Throughout the Great Patriotic War, sailors of the Baltic Fleet kept fighting valiantly against the invaders, protecting cities, and defending against aerial and naval attacks. The Baltic Fleet made an invaluable contribution to the historic victory of the Soviet forces.
