Purygin V.Z.
Volga Riverside
#2
Artist Valentin Purygin was born in 1926 in a village of the Saratov region, located along the Volga riversides. When he was 5 years old, his family moved to Samara, where the painter spent most of his life. He was educated in the capital — Purygin graduated from the Moscow Secondary Art School and the Surikov Art Institute at the Russian Academy of Arts. He took a course in painting from Georgy Ryazhsky, a portrait painter, a member of the USSR Academy of Arts.

After graduation, Purygin returned to Samara and, together with his fellow artists — Gennady Filatov, Ivan Komissarov, Alfons Kulakovsky and Yuri — began to explore the outskirts of the town and paint Volga landscapes.

The central element of Purygin’s Samara paintings was a type of poplar with dark brown bark that grows in the valleys of large rivers, including the Volga.

Purygin painted the picture “The Volga Riverside” in 1983. He portrayed a hot summer sunny day.
In the center of the composition you can see old tall sedge trees, behind which there is a blue house on the water. On the right side of it is a wide river, on the surface of which the sun is reflected. The town is showing up on the opposite riverside. To enliven the landscape, the artist added figures of people: a lonely girl in a pink bathing suit is sitting on the waterfront, groups of friends are boating.

The painter performed work on wood, and with the help of the texture of the material, he emphasized the curves of the sandy cliff in the foreground. He paid special attention to the surface of the river — Purygin used strokes of different widths and a large number of shades of blue and light blue color to convey the variety of water. He depicted dark waves near the coast, a calm quiet surface in the distance and ripples from the wind with the glare of the sun.

Composer Tikhon Khrennikov often went on tours to different cities of the Soviet Union, including the Volga region. His concerts took place in Nizhny Novgorod, Rybinsk, Yaroslavl and Samara. During one of these trips, he received a painting “The Volga Riverside” as a gift from fans.

Khrennikov appreciated gifts from the audience and kept this picture as a memory of the trip. In 2000, the composer donated the work to the collection of the house-museum.
