Arkady Rylov was born in 1870 in Istobensk, Vyatka province. The future artist spent almost all his childhood and youth in Vyatka and devoted most of his memories and creative works to his hometown.
Rylov had a passionate love for nature since childhood. He loved travelling around the city, especially along the river on a sailboat. ‘Life by the fire, by the water, among the wild, untouched nature brought up a landscape painter in me, ” Rylov recalled. The beauty and grandeur of Vyatka’s nature captivated him so much that he could wander through forests and meadows all day, spending the night by a fire near the river, carefully observing birds and forest animals.
Arkady Rylov in the full sense of the word can be considered a student and follower of the artist and teacher Arkhip Kuindzhi. The professor himself invited Rylov to his workshop when he entered the Imperial Art Academy. The teacher and student turned out to be surprisingly close in the nature of their artistic talents. Having experienced the influence of Kuindzhi’s artistic skill, Rylov forever retained his attachment to romantic images, lighting effects, and decorative understanding of color. At the same time, he followed precisely his teacher’s precept to work as much as possible on sketches, studying nature. Like Kuindzhi, Rylov built the composition of the painting ‘from himself’, summarizing all impressions from nature and subordinating them to a certain ideological concept.
That is how the landscape ‘The White Night. Night dawn " was made. The work is based on studies made both in Vyatka and in Saint Petersburg. The canvas is characterized by an epic mood. The author used a favorite composition with a backstage solution of the foreground close to the viewer and a wide spread of space behind it. The silhouettes of the trees, the delicacy of their branches, and the flatness of large color spots give the landscape a decorative effect that is a characteristic for the master’s works. The author strove to overcome the instantaneousness and transience of immediate perception and to give it constancy and significance.
