The “Medicine in Vyatka” section of the museum houses an exhibit that could become the centerpiece of any medical museum, as enthusiastically confirmed by many doctors visiting the exhibition. This anesthesia device allowed many Vyatka residents to receive the necessary treatment. It came into use in 1847.
On October 16, 1846, ether anesthesia was used in surgery for the first time at the Massachusetts Hospital.
In the summer of 1847, Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov became the first surgeon in the world to use ether anesthesia in a field operation. He is rightly considered the founder of field surgery. He also came up with the idea of applying plaster casts to treat fractured bones: before that, doctors had used a wooden splint. Pirogov also founded the institute of sisters of mercy.
At the young age of 26, Nikolay Pirogov already became a professor of medicine. He was an extraordinarily talented doctor. Back then, the main characteristic of a surgeon was their speed: as surgery was conducted without anesthesia, it had to be performed in a matter of minutes, otherwise, the patient could die from the shock of pain. Pirogov became one of the best in this regard: he performed hip disarticulation and bladder stone removal in 1.5 to 3 minutes. However, Pirogov was well aware that the lack of anesthesia hindered the development of surgery. Diseases requiring major surgery were considered incurable.
Pirogov’s experience was continued by zemsky doctors in Vyatka. For example, the well-known local surgeon and the founder of thoracic surgery, Alexander Nikolayevich Bakulev (1890–1967) successfully used anesthesia.
Alexander Bakulev, a scientist, surgeon, and one of the founders of cardiovascular surgery in the USSR, was a person who devoted his entire life to his passion — medicine.
Bakulev performed the first surgery for a congenital heart defect in the Soviet Union. He was also one of the pioneers of neurosurgery in the USSR, the founder and first director of the Thoracic Surgery Institute (later renamed the Bakulev Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery).
An outstanding surgery manager, a brilliant surgeon, a Hero of Socialist Labor, a member of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, a winner of the Lenin and State Prizes, an Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, a prominent statesman and public figure, Alexander Nikolayevich Bakulev brought glory to the Vyatka region.
