The fresco illustrates the seventh ikos of the Akathist to the Holy Virgin, which starts with words: ‘Wholly present was the Inexpressible Word among those here below, yet in no way absent from those on high; for this was a divine condescension and not a change of place, and His birth was from a God-receiving Virgin…’ God Sabaoth is depicted in heavenly glory with the golden vessel in His hands. He is surrounded by the angels holding instruments of the Passion of the Christ. The lower part of the composition had the throne image of Jesus Christ surrounded by John the Baptist and the Mother of God. However, this part was lost after the enlargement of the window in the 18th century.

The Akathist Hymn is one of the most well-loved services of devotion in the Orthodox Church. The Akathist to the Holy Virgin is a praise hymn in Her honor, composed in Byzantium between the 5th and 7th centuries. In the Russian tradition of authorship is attributed to Venerable Roman the Melodist (6th century). The cycle of illustrations of Akathist is traditionally included in the decoration system of the Virgin temples and temples dedicated to other people and events. In ancient Russian monumental painting of the 16th–17th centuries, it is often adjacent to the cycle of the Protoevangelium of James.
