The Transbaikal Regional Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums in Siberia and the Russian Far East. It was founded in 1894 and presently is named after one of the initiators of its creation — a revolutionary, public figure and local historian Aleksey Kuznetsov.
Over the years, the museum has built up a massive collection which represents the life and traditions of the Buryats, the Evenks and the Russians in Transbaikal. The exhibits include archeological artifacts, documents, photographs, national costumes and full-size models of national dwellings.
The museum collection has been created and replenished with gifts from local residents and scientific expeditions. Nowadays, it consists of more than 217 thousand items.
