In 1920, two museums were established in Volsk: the Central Scientific and Educational Museum and the Museum of Arts and History. Five years later, they were merged into one Central Scientific and Educational Museum, which was later renamed and became the Volsk Museum of Local History in 1931.
The museum has several structural divisions, located in separate landmarked buildings of the 19th century: the department of history, the department of nature, the art gallery, and the hall ‘Estate of the 1812 War hero, Count V. V. Orlov-Denisov’.
Visitors to the Volsk Museum of Local History will see extensive geological and paleontological collections, archaeological and numismatic rarities, a collection of bladed weapons and firearms, as well as collections of paintings, sculptures, items of decorative and applied arts, and rare books.
