The Volgograd Museum of Local History is one of the oldest museums in the Volga region, it was opened in 1914. It is housed in two buildings, the former Zemstvo Board and the Volzhsko-Kamsky Commercial Bank — monuments of history and architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The museum collection consists of more than 160,000 items, including unique monuments of nature and history of the region. The museum was opened thanks to the efforts of merchant Alexander Alexandrovich Repnikov and local historians Bogdan Viktorovich Zaikovsky and Boris Aleksandrovich Keller.
In 1915, the Tsaritsyn Museum of the Local Area, as it was then called, displayed its first exhibits in the House of Science and Arts. From April 1925 until the beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad, the museum was located in the building of the former Transfiguration Church.
During the Great Patriotic War, the museum building was destroyed, and many of the collections that had not been evacuated, perished. In 1954, the museum resumed its work in the building of the Forestry College.
The museum has the following permanent exhibitions: “The Nature of the Volgograd Region”, “Archaeology. From the Stone Age to the Middle Ages”, “History of the late 16th century — early 20th century”, “The Golden Horde. Secrets of the vanished civilization”, “Beyond the Don, beyond the river…”, “This land is yours and mine”, and “Nostalgia for the fifties…”
The Volgograd Regional Museum of Local History offers interactive programs, quests, walking tours, lectures and museum festivals. Visitors can take a look at the “Open Collections”, see Sarmatian gold, and explore the collection of ancient weapons.
