The Tver Regional Art Gallery was founded in 1866. Initially it was part of the ‘Tver Museum’, and in 1937 it became an independent museum. Currently the gallery collection numbers around 32.000 showpieces. It includes the collections of the Old Russian art of the 14th-20th centuries, Russian painting, graphic and sculpture of the 18th-20th centuries, Western European art of the 15th-20th centuries, decorative and applied arts from Russia, Europe and the East. The Tver Imperial Palace constructed for the Empress Catherine the Great in the 18th century upon the project of the great Russian city planner Petr Romanovich Nikitin changed its look multiple times during its more than two centuries long history, reflecting the styles and tastes of different epochs.
