Stavropol Krai Museum of Fine Arts was opened in December 1961. The first director of the museum was art critic Boris Bendik, who was also involved in the formation of collections.
The museum is located in the historical centre of Stavropol, among architectural monuments of federal significance — merchant mansions, which were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum’s collection is the largest in the region. It contains 25 thousand pieces of Russian and foreign art. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions from its own holdings, private collections and workshops, and other museums.
In addition to painting and graphics, the museum has a lot of pieces of art, a collection of photographs, a small collection of Russian icons of the 17th-19th centuries, as well as exhibits representing the culture of Japan and China.
