The Sayanogorsk Museum of Local Lore was created with the aim of studying, preserving and popularizing the historical and cultural heritage of the city and its surroundings.
The grand opening of the museum took place in 1999. The visitors were presented with the first exhibition “From Century to Century, ” the basis of which were objects of the Late Paleolithic, artifacts of Tagar archaeological culture and the Middle Ages.
The museum collections number more than 30 thousand exhibits. They reflect the history and culture from ancient times to the present day, tell about the construction of the city, the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power plant and the Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter.
In 2016, the museum
opened an Ethnocultural Complex. A Russian hut and a Khakass yurt were built on
its territory. Inside them, there are
exhibitions with objects of ethnography and decorative and applied art. The complex
conducts excursions, city and regional events, has a stage and viewing
platforms.
