The Republican Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Yoshkar-Ola is the only museum in Mari El that purposefully forms a collection of contemporary Mari fine art.
In 1981, the Republican Exhibition Hall was opened in Yoshkar-Ola. Since the late 1980s, multiple exhibitions were held to strengthen interethnic relations, and many works by artists from the Russian autonomous republics were exhibited.
In order to improve, develop and promote the Mari fine arts, on January 1, 1990, the Hall was transformed into the Republican Museum of Fine Arts. Since its foundation, the museum has become a platform for artists living in the Mari land.
In 2007, a structural subdivision of the museum was created in Mari El — the National Art Gallery, a modern museum complex with the latest technological equipment and control systems.
On the initiative of the Mari regional branch of the Artists’ Union of Russia, with the support of the Government of the Mari El Republic, the museum regularly holds All-Russian plein-airs. As a result of the plein-air sessions, thematic collections of paintings and graphic works emerged, including artworks created by contemporary ethnofuturists.
To commemorate the centenary of the Republic of Mari El, the exhibition project “A Century Long Journey” has been organized in an updated format.
