The Pskov State United Historical, Architectural and Art Museum Reserve is one of the oldest museums in Russia. It was founded as the Pskov Archaeology Museum through the efforts of local historians in 1876. It remained open to visitors even throughout the tumultuous times of the Russian Revolution and wars. From the very beginning, the museum became a public institution under the jurisdiction of the Archaeology Commission and the Governorate Statistics Committee.
In 1979, it became known as the Pskov State United Historical, Architectural and Art Museum Reserve.
On January 20, 2021, it received the status of a federal museum.
Today, the museum encompasses the Pskov Fortress, protected by UNESCO, as well as 17 other sites in Pskov and three additional sites in Pskov Oblast.
Containing over 670,000 exhibits, the museum houses one of the largest collections in Russia.
