Tobolsk Provincial Museum was founded in 1870 and became the first museum in Siberia. For the first 20 years, the museum did not have its own building, but by 1890, the building was finally built with donations from concerned Tobolsk residents. The Tobolsk Provincial Museum became the scientific and cultural center of Siberia, and in 1891, it received the patronage of the future Emperor Nicholas II.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Tobolsk Provincial Museum was reformatted into the Museum of the Tobolsk North and moved, and in 1961, the Tobolsk Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve was created on its basis. The memorial building now houses an exhibition dedicated to the history of Siberia before the arrival of Yermak. In addition, the museum has rich paleontological, archaeological, and ethnographic collections, as well as a collection of sculptures of the Tobolsk school of bone-cutting skills.
