The Orsk Museum of Local History represents the largest archive of cultural materials from the east of the Orenburg Region. The collection of archeology, paintings, historical household items, documents and photographs amounts to more than 75,000 individual items.
The museum’s opening day is recorded as the day it first welcomed visitors — 18 June 1939. During the Great Patriotic War, the museum was temporarily closed and its exhibits were stored in boxes in a school’s basement. The museum only re-opened in 1947 and recommenced collecting exhibits, and in 1950 it welcomed its first visitors to the premises, in a former cinema on K. Marx Street.
The museum changed location in 1958 to 46 Lenin Prospect, where it was able to create a permanent collection exploring the pre-soviet and soviet period. On 18 March 2011, the museum re-opened after refurbishment. The permanent collection was completely revamped and equipped with cutting edge technology, giving the visitors a much wider scope of the city’s cultural heritage.
The Orsk Museum of Local History has chosen an innovative path forward and today it is the most modern museum in the Orenburg Region.
