The National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan (NMRT, originally called the Kazan Municipal Science and Industry Museum) opened on April 5, 1895. Its very first collection was based on the exhibits of the 1890 Kazan Science and Industry Exhibition and a vast collection owned by archaeologist and historian Andrei Likhachev.

As of now, the museum has over 800,000 objects representing the history of the Volga and Cis-Urals region peoples from the ancient time till nowadays. Over the years of its life, NMRT has gathered Russia’s largest regional collection.

The Museum has 15 branches, its headquarters is based in the historical building of what used to be the Gostiny Dvor, the Arcade. NMRT hosts several permanent exhibitions, namely Ancient history of Tatarstan, Currency, trading, and trade routes in the Middle Ages, Tatar gold storehouse, and Kazan Governorate in the 18th century.
